If your home receives its water supply from a well, you need a powerful purification system to make the water safe for household consumption. Reverse osmosis systems are often used for this purpose, but how effective are they? Here is what you need to know about well-water reverse osmosis systems.
Do I Need A RO System For My Well Water?
It is advisable to filter and purify your well water before you consume it. Well water could contain any number of contaminants that make it unfit for your family’s use. If you need your household water to be of a higher quality than your well water, then an RO system is highly recommended for you. Before making the final decision, however, it is a good idea to have your well water analyzed. By doing so, you will identify the issues you are currently dealing with in regard to your well water, and you can see for sure whether a whole-house RO system will be worth your while.
You should also decide what type of RO system you need. Some units can be installed at the point of entry, while others are installed at the point of use. In most cases, if you are using the system to purify well water for the entire house, you will need a point-of-entry system. On the other hand, it may be more economic to use RO only on taps that will be used for drinking, cooking and dental hygiene. If you opt for this type of RO system, just be sure not to consume water from any other taps – use these only for washing and bathing, etc.
How Effective Is The RO System?
Reverse osmosis has been proven to be the most effective way of eliminating water contaminants. They can remove up to 99% of lead, asbestos and 82 other additional contaminants from water, making it extremely safe for household use.
What Happens To The Substances Taken From The Water?
The contaminants are flushed out in the form of wastewater, which is disposed of through the drainage system. This rejected water, which can amount to roughly 50% of the supply, can be recycled. Reject water from point-of-use reverse osmosis units may be discharged to a septic system, but reject water from point-of-entry reverse osmosis units should not be disposed of in this way, unless an engineer with expertise in on-site services has confirmed that it is acceptable to do so.
